関東地方に台風が近づいています。
これを英語で言えますか。
近づく、っていうのがミソですね。
これは、approach という動詞を使います。
A Typhoon is approaching Kanto area.
文法が気になる私は、ここでちょっと引っかかりました。
「ん？待てよ、台風は自分で近づくんだから、動詞は自動詞？のはず。とすると、Kanto area の前に前置詞 to とかはいらないのか？」
と。
これは approach という他動詞に「～に近づく」の「～に」という助詞の部分までの意味が含まれる動詞なのです。
なので、 approach TOKYO. で 東京に近づく。似た動詞に reach がありますよね。これも他動詞なので、
reach TOKYO でよいわけで reach to とは言いません。
ですので、A Typhoon is approaching Kanto area.
でよいわけです。
これから都心に行く予定。どうか直撃（hit) はしませんように。
